Matt’s sailing life all started down at Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron where he would spend his summer school holidays training in and racing Minnows. In later years Matt sailed many other classes that include Laser’s, 49er’s, Musto Skiff and Sharpie’s to name a few. Matt’s father Andrew Lawrence had owned and raced keelboats for most of his time in the off the beach boats, so it was inevitable that Matt would transition to keelboats at an early age. At the age of 15 he made his debut on the bow of ‘Jazz Player’ at Geelong Race Week.
Now 26, Matt has accumulated a vase amount of keelboat experience in a relatively short period with approximately 15,000 ocean miles on the clock. Some of the major races that he has competed include Melbourne to Hobart (Line honours and 1st IRC 2009), Melbourne to Vanuatu, Auckland to Fiji, Auckland to Russel 2016, Sydney to Goldcoast, Brisbane to Keppel and 7 Rolex Sydney Hobart Races.
Day to day Matt works as a boat builder, running his own business where majority of his work is conducted out of Sandringham Yacht Club. He also holds a double university bachelor in business management and industrial design.
